He further said that the anger of the Islamic world over Salman Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses is understandable but the attack on him was not justified.

In the interview I talked about the Islamic perspective on punishment for blasphemers. He referred to the Sialkot tragedy and spoke of Rushdie in the same context.

Salman Rushdie attacked

Salman Rushdie was attacked with a knife by a man in New York a week ago. This left many deep wounds on his throat. He was taken to the hospital by air ambulance. Salman Rushdie is currently out of danger, but is undergoing treatment. The attacker has been identified as an Iranian national. He was furious about his novel and wanted to fulfill the fatwa of Iranian cleric Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
