Netflix and Hollywood call for a new fight against Pirate IPTV in Europe

The services problem IPTV pirate continues to provoke criticism of the European regulator, this time by the association of major Hollywood studios, as well as by the Netflix. In fact, the giant transmission of movies and series online, with the MPA (Motion Picture Association) are calling for stronger measures and regulations with the European Comission.

Both entities will have asked the European regulator for help to strengthen the fight against pirated IPTV services that continue to grow in the global market. For the MPA, only with more severe measures can this pirate ecosystem be reduced to insignificance, because as long as it is a profitable activity it will continue to generate income and grow.

Netflix and MPA call for redoubled efforts to combat Pirated IPTV

The new outcry coincides with the publication of the list of pirated content inside and outside the United States of America which, once again, places IPTV as one of the main threats to content distribution.

At the same time, the Counterfeiting and Piracy Watch Listpublished annually by the European Commission, collects similar information to monitor these illegal activities.

Now as mentioned in the post torrentfreakIn recent submissions to the 2022 list, MPA and Netflix add their calls for more regulation and combating pirated IPTV.

However, the problem will not be easily solved due to several factors, such as the international scale of the main content distribution networks.

Piracy problem comes down to easy profits from IPTV services

Testimony from both entities underscores the magnitude of the problem and widespread piracy. Affirming, more specifically, that one in four Internet users visits crazy pages and websites with the intention of consuming online content.

At the same time, they point out that these services have profit margins between 86% and 93%, which reveals the high profitability of these pirated platforms. On the other hand, for users these services also represent a risk to their security.

More specifically, as these are clandestine services, the risk of illegal data collection, exposure of bank details associated with payment methods, for example, and other related information is particularly high.

Pirata IPTV services have been at the center of this illegal activity for several years. Entities dedicated to the distribution and sale of closed signal television channels, premium such as Sport TV, or access to Netflix and other platforms continues to increase.

On the other hand, the European regulator itself, through the EUIPO, continues to compile, in the form of a list, the main websites and distribution platforms for this content. It should be noted, however, that given the “broadness and complexity” of the problem, the resolution is maintained on a case-by-case basis, with the sporadic closure of the Pirate IPTV distribution channels.

In short, despite the claims of Netflix, MPA and other large entities, the fight against this scourge continues as usual, with hands tied by the global eradication of IPTV services.

Blatant promotion of piracy is common in Facebook ads, but more noticeable on social networks like Twitter and YouTube. However, it is on the Telegram platform where this phenomenon has essentially had free rein for several years.

However, we have seen an increase in the closure and criminal prosecution of those responsible for various IPTV networks in Europe in recent years. Although this greater attention and fight against this reality does not reduce demand, at least it denotes greater attention from the European regulator to this illegal activity.

Finally, in Portugal we are also witnessing a near normalization of these illegal content distribution services. Something that can be associated with the high prices of legitimate content distribution channels and services, as well as the ease with which “cheap” options are presented.

In short, it is a reality that will hardly be reprimanded and lowered in the near future. Despite mounting pressure from major players sector, the fight against piracy will continue to be, for now, a casuistry in Europe and in the rest of the world.
