Apple TV: The app lost this functionality

The latest update to the Apple TV app has removed the option to rent or buy movies on Android TV and Google TV devices.

User criticism is already circulating on social networks, but the reason that led Apple to make such a decision is unknown. But some experts suggest it could be related to fees from in-app purchases.

Apple TV app update removes an option directly tied to Google TV and Android TV

An update for the Apple TV app was recently released and all the users who installed it learned that the app no longer allows you to rent or buy movies on Android TV and Google TV devices, although it does allow you to watch all previously purchased titles.

The two buttons that gave access to the functionality were replaced with a new “How to watch” button that brings the message “you can buy, rent or subscribe to the Apple TV app on iPhone, iPad and other streaming devices”, directing users to Apple product pages.

The occurrence did not go unnoticed by users who have already reported this case in the most diverse social networks.

Apple’s decision may be related to commissions

The reason for this decision by Apple is unknown, but some analysts suggest that the origin of this option may be related to commissions. Google, like Apple, charges a 30% fee on in-app purchases, and Apple may want to avoid this fee.

However, if this reason is confirmed, the situation is at least strange. All because Apple itself has forcefully defended its own App Store listings against criticism from various programmers, as well as regularly battling antitrust investigations, all over the world.

So far, neither Apple nor Google have commented on the case. But we are waiting for the next chapters of what could be the next battle between two North American technological giants.
