Virtual Reality is causing an increase in insurance claims

If you’ve ever tried a VR headset, you’ll know how immersive it can be. Often, you forget you’re in the real world and can even move around the room blindly.

For that reason, it’s not uncommon to hear stories or watch videos of people falling to the floor, bumping into the couch, or even breaking the TV during a VR game.

In fact, the rise in popularity of Virtual Reality has reached the point where, according to British insurance company Aviva, There is an increase in complaints related to Virtual Reality.

Kelly Whittington, director of property claims at Aviva UK, said: Guardian:

As new games and gadgets become popular, we often see this reflected in claims made by our customers. We’ve seen similar trends in the past for consoles and cell phones, gym games, and even fidget spinners.

The company claims to have seen a 31% increase in claims in 2021, which is an increase of about 68% since 2016. They also point out that a fairly common allegation has to do with broken televisions when gamers get too excited.
