Nintendo Switch Online: the price climbs to 50 € per year to play N64 and Megadrive games

On the occasion of a new Nintendo Direct during which the company unveiled a new DLC of Animal Crossing New Horizon, Nintendo also took the opportunity to announce the price of the new Switch Online subscription.

Nintendo announced last month a new subscription called “Switch Online + Additional Pack” through which you will be able to enjoy a few dozen Nintendo 64 and Mega Drive games. The company had so far not communicated the price of this new subscription. However, on the occasion of today’s Nintendo Direct, the company officially announced that the subscription will be available on October 25 at a price of 49.99 euros per year.

This is a fairly substantial increase compared to the classic Nintendo Switch Online subscription, available at 19.99 euros per month. The price of the family subscription will also more than double if you want to enjoy the new retro games together, since it will cost 79.99 euros per year, against 34.99 euros with the current family subscription.

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers won’t pay the full price

If you have a classic subscription and want to acquire this new pack, Nintendo says that a prorated reduction will be applied automatically when changing subscription based on the number of days remaining on a current subscription. However, the company did not give more details in its announcement. As a reminder, the classic Nintendo Switch Online membership already gives you access to online multiplayer, classic NES and SNES games, cloud saves and other benefits.

With its new Nintendo Switch Online subscription + Additional Pack, Nintendo also plans to sell retro Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive controllers. These have been modernized for the occasion, since they will work wirelessly using Bluetooth. Only Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will be able to order them on the official website. According to Nintendo’s information, they will be available soon at a price of 49.99 euros.

We also recently learned that the Nintendo 64 games can be displayed in 50 Hz or 60 Hz depending on the preference of the players, enough to take full advantage of it on the new Nintendo Switch OLED which you can find our ultra complete test here.
