Samsung: Most smartphones will ditch Snapdragon processors

A new report published by ETNews publication reveals a significant change in Samsung’s strategy. The problem is the processors used in their smartphones that will soon be more independent from Snapdragon.

South Korea’s strategy will be to give primacy to its Exynos processors. A scenario that crosses all market segments in which the brand participates.

More than half of Samsung smartphones will be equipped with Exynos

Currently, Exynos processors can be found in about 20% of Samsung’s portfolio. In fact, they have a timid influence, but the technology seems determined to put more emphasis on their components.

Samsung

According to the ETNews report, 50% to 60% of smartphones Samsung will switch to Exynos processors. It will be a significant expansion and will impact products from high-end models to humble entry-level models.

To achieve this goal, Samsung will have already started to expand its factories dedicated to the production of semiconductors. In addition, its partners will also increase investment to adapt to the new Korean technology goals.

The current shortage of components and chips appears to be at the origin of this change in strategy. To try to solve the problem, Samsung will want to depend less and less on third parties for the development and production of its equipment.

Also, we must consider the recent partnership between Samsung and AMD for the development of Exynos processors. This was the first step taken by the South Koreans to try to dispel the negative image that has haunted their SoCs.

The first fruit of this association will be the supposed Exynos 2200 that should equip some variants of the Samsung Galaxy S22. Preliminary tests point to a significant evolution in its graphics performance compared to current competitors.

Although Snapdragon processors are more common in the lower ranges of Samsung, everything indicates that this will no longer happen. Instead, we’ll see more and more Exynos in these outfits.

However, it is not clear if this change in strategy will start from 2022. But the source is quite convinced that it will be a matter of time before the change begins to be significant.
