93.9% of domestic workers registered between January and June were informal

As of June this year, the Survey Division of the Department of National Accounts and Economic Statistics of the Central Bank recorded a total of 236,797 people dedicated to domestic service in the country, of which 93.9% remained in the informal sector and only 6.01% in the formal sector.

The Informal domestic workers represent 8.17% of the total number of informal workers and 11.23% of the formally employed, according to labor market indicators for 15-year-olds.

As of the second quarter of 2022, there was an increase of 21,025 people dedicated to domestic servicegoing from 215,772 in the first quarter to 236,797 in the second.

Recently, the Government ordered the formalization of domestic work in the country to comply with Convention 189 of the International Labor Organization (ILO), establishing their income, in the next three months, to social security under the scheme of the subsidized-contributory regime and a minimum salary of RD$10,000 for the sector.

According to the Guide for the Formalization of Domestic Work, people dedicated to domestic service will have to sign with their employer a contract with a eight hour workday daily and as a proposal, three hours are defined: 6:00 am to 9:00 am, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm The contract must also include the right to vacation and the daily or weekly rest.

Other labor data

As of June 2022, a total population of 10,610,654 was registered and it is 7,854,612 represented the working age population (PET) and 4,958,268 as labor force, of which 4,702,017 employed (2,158,711 formal and 2,306,509 informal).
