June 25, 1983 … a day considered to be one of the most important days in the golden history of Indian cricket. A day when all of India rejoiced with joy. On June 25, 1983, India defeated the West Indies team considered very strong in the final of the Cricket World Cup. It was a day that still has a place in the hearts of Indian cricket fans.

The West Indies team was the most powerful team in the world during the 1980s. The team had won the World Cup in 1975 and 1979. Sunil Gavaskar, popularly known as ‘Little Master’, was also on this 1983 World Cup Indian team. Although his tournament was not special, he has made a great contribution to Indian cricket. He has also taken over the team. He brought professionalism to the team. In the 1983 World Cup, Gavaskar played 6 games in which he scored 59 runs.

In the title match, Gavaskar was sacked for only 2 runs, he faced 12 balls and spent only 14 minutes on the field but from this we cannot say that he was less than anyone else. He was counted among the best hitters of his time. Gavaskar has been awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

Gavaskar played 125 games in his test career and scored 10,122 runs. His average was 51.12 and his highest score was 236. He has 34 centuries and 45 half centuries to his name. In 108 ODI he played, he scored 3,092 runs and his undefeated 103 was his most runs. It has a century and 27 half centuries to its name in the One Day International format.
