8 killed in protest-violence in Pakistan, 1900 arrested

Supporters of former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan staged mass protests in various parts of the country against his arrest. At least eight people have been killed in nationwide protests. More than 290 people were injured. Widespread arrests are going on amid the protests and violence. In a statement, the Punjab Police said action has been taken in the province against attacks on government property, police and law enforcement agencies. Miscreants involved in violent activities, vandalism, damage to public and private property have been arrested across the province.

The statement also said that more than 130 police personnel were injured in the attack on the protesters. Police arrested 945 law breakers and miscreants across the province.

According to the BBC, the army is being deployed in many areas of Pakistan to control the situation. A strict alert has been issued after angry mobs attacked military properties. Imran Khan’s arrest at a time of economic crisis has dramatically increased tensions between Pakistan’s former prime minister and the military.

Imran Khan was arrested on Tuesday afternoon outside the Islamabad High Court in a corruption case. It has been alleged that Imran was harassed during his arrest. He was hit on the head and legs. Pakistan became a virtual war zone over his arrest.

PTI party supporters protested against Article 144 in the capital Islamabad. Apart from this, there have been protests in all cities including Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar. During this time, security forces clashed with the protestors. It appeared in the media that the protesters were seen protesting by lighting fires on the streets.
