The official presentation of MIUI from December 13 to 28 by Xiaomi itself finally released the news of the new version of this user interface based on the Android 12 operating system. So here we have compiled its biggest news.
However, keep in mind that despite looking like a general and significant update compared to MIUI 12.5, the changes are not basic or extraordinary, in addition to certain features that may remain unique to China. There are, however, the introduction of new functions and the improvement of various aspects, these are worth mentioning.
Anyway, this list serves as a guide to account for the main changes present in the new MIUI 13. It is also important to note that some of the new functionalities are divided between MIUI 13, MIUI 13 Pair (for tablets) and MIUI 13 Double (to fold).
1. MiSans: the new source of MIUI 13

First of all, we have a new font available to users. Nicknamed MiSans, it will be one more option to personalize the experience of using this interface for Xiaomi mobile devices.
According to the brand itself, this new “font” is optimized for Mandarin and English, standing out for the visibility and ease of reading the content presented.
This font belongs to the Dynamic Font System 2.0 with “OpenType” characteristics in which the height of certain elements is automatically adapted to the presentation, for example, in upper and lower case.
2. There are new widgets in MIUI 13
There are new interactive elements that we can add to the main screen of our Xiaomi devices. These are new widgets for various applications, with an emphasis on various Chinese applications, so their usefulness may be reduced outside of China.
However, we also have new minigames that we can add to the main screen, in addition to timers, reminders to drink water, what to eat, suggestions for the day, tasks and calendars, among other elements.
It should be noted, however, that a good part of this new range of widgets may remain exclusive to China, but only with the start of the MIUI 13 distribution will we be sure.
3. Science-inspired wallpapers
MIUI 12 has brought us a new type of animated wallpapers for Xiaomi phones and devices. Now with MIUI 13 we have the deepening of MIUI Super Wallpapers with more animations and a new partnership with “Beauty of Science”.
We have several new patterns inspired by crystals and minerals, result of videos lapse of time (time interval) captured in 8K showing phenomena such as crystallization and other genesis moments in high quality.
We currently do not know if this item, Beauty of Science Wallpapers, will be available outside of China.
4. Most customizable Xiaomi virtual assistant: Xiao AI
This is another novelty with a strong impact in China, but practically nil outside its borders. For your virtual assistant, Xiao AI, Xiaomi now lets you choose from 50 new color / clothing / effect combinations for the avatar of the assistant.
There are also new voice packages for the proprietary virtual assistant, as well as new activation keywords.
5. Improved privacy in MIUI 13
The MIUI 13 presentation also included a reference to the certification of more security and data privacy agencies according to the MIUI 12 standard and listing. The most important point in this regard is the “virtual ID” in this new iteration of MIUI.
We have several changes in the authentication system through user facial recognition. Thus, while until now this processing was carried out by the system only on the user’s face, now the upper part of the torso is also evaluated by the security system.
In this way we have more authentication points – face + torso – available to users. Additionally, users can choose to put a watermark on important documents when performing a scan.
Lastly, there is increased protection against spam calls and SMS, as well as malware-infected applications and potentially dangerous file downloads.
6. There are various performance optimizations for Xiaomi devices.
Xiaomi has put a new emphasis on the Focus Computation, Atomic Memory and Liquid Storage functions. It should be noted that these three optimization levels were introduced by MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition in order to provide better performance.
In practice, Xiaomi claims that the fluidity of the system, both system applications and third-party applications, are now optimized between 20 and 26% compared to the previous version of the interface, MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition.
In this way, devices like the Xiaomi Mix 4 can have up to 14 applications open in the background and continue to work. Finally, the performance and file read / write speed on devices with Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro will decrease only 5% after 36 months of use on average.
7. We have a new Xiaomi Mi Magic Center on MIUI 13
The new Mi Magic Center is inspired by Huawei’s HarmonyOS Super Device, which consists of a virtual control center for all Xiaomi ecosystem products connected to the same account.
In short, for those who have several Xiaomi devices and products in their home, they will now have a new place to manage them. Be it content playback, personalization, and automation, this hub will provide a simple and intuitive interface for that purpose.
However, it should be noted that this is another feature available only for certain Xiaomi products (and in certain regions).
8. MIUI 13 pad for Xiaomi tablets
Just as Apple dedicated a branch of its iOS to the iPad, iPadOS, Xiaomi also brought its MIUI 13 to its Android tablets. So, in the new MIUI 13 Pad we have the optimization of the interface for the big screen of the tablets and the focus on work.
We have support for floating windows, with various scaling options to provide a true desktop and multitask.
In addition to devices from Apple, Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi itself, there is also a synchronization of devices and content that have MIUI 13 to copy and paste content between devices, for example.
Finally, the first batch of MIUI 13 compatible devices will start to update in end of january 2022, in China. You can consult the list of compatible equipment, with several models of smartphones already listed.
