While previous studies announced 3.5 million 5G subscribers by the end of 2021, operators have decided to revise their objectives downwards, as assured by our colleagues from the FreeNews site.
5G has been available on French territory since November 18, 2020. Slowly, but surely, the four main operators in France are working to complete their respective networks with ever more compatible antennas. According to the ANFR, France already has 30,000 operational 5G sites.
Shortly after the debut of the new generation of mobile network, the manufacturer Ericsson published a study on the interest of the French concerning 5G. According to the report, 20% of users are willing to switch to a 5G compatible device. In addition, the Swedish brand announced no less than 3.5 million 5G subscribers in France by the end of 2021.
And precisely, Ericsson has just published a new study on October 5, 2021 dedicated to the different solutions envisaged for “improve user satisfaction and accelerate the adoption of 5G in France ”. One year after his previous report, the Swedish company has therefore revised its predictions downwards concerning the number of 5G subscribers in France.

2 million 5G subscribers in France by mid 2022 according to Ericsson
According to her, they could be two million to switch to 5G by the first half of 2022. An achievable goal according to Ericsson, knowing that “24% of users already own a 5G phone ”. Despite the growing democratization of 5G compatible smartphones in France, the Ericsson study specifies that two critical factors must be taken into account to accelerate the adoption of 5G in our country: “network coverage and the offer of applications and services that reveal the full potential of 5G for consumers ”.
Thus and according to Franck Bouétard, Chairman and CEO of Ericsson France, less than 10% of the French population is covered in 5G 3.5 GHz and less than 8% of the radio antennas have been migrated to this 5G 3.5 GHz. “However, it is this technology that makes it possible to deliver a premium experience so that consumers perceive the value of 5G ”, he recalls.
The boss of Ericsson France underlines in passing that 95% of South Korea’s population is covered in 5G on the queen band, thus highlighting France’s backwardness in this area. “More than a question of network infrastructure, it is a question of national and European competitiveness ”, concludes the frame. As a reminder, Europe has asked Ericsson and Nokia to design the 6G network of tomorrow.
