57,545 m3 of concrete

The works of the Santiago Bernabéu continue their course (full will finish until December 2022), but The 25,000 fans who come to the League match against Celta this Sunday will find a venue very different from the one where they witnessed the last match, a Clásico against Barcelona, more than a year and a half ago. The renovation work on the Madrid stadium has progressed to leave a radically different appearance from what it had and in recent days they have accelerated to have everything ready to resume football activity, with three work shifts to cover 24 hours a day.

One of the last tasks has been the installation and fine-tuning of the lawn. The work on the structure that will allow the lawn to be retractable once the works are finished have made it necessary to rush the deadlines to put the green, making it one of the most interesting and even exciting processes from a technical and scientific point of view. The 500 sods of natural grass (they are the same type as the Valdebebas fields) have been bred since April in Plasencia (Cáceres) and 10 days ago they were transferred to the Bernabéu, at night, in a three-hour trip made in refrigerated trucks. that kept the grass at about zero degrees Celsius. The high temperatures in Madrid have been another challenge to overcome and therefore the lawn installation work has been carried out at dawn to prevent the heat from damaging it. For your installation 30 cubic meters of sand had to be removed per 7,500 square meters, in a process supervised at all times by the Real Madrid pitch and garden manager.

More than 1,000 workers from different specialties work daily on the construction sites, which is executed by the FCC construction company under the direction and supervision of Real Madrid technicians. The enclosure and its surroundings occupy an area of 90,000 square meters. The urban plan does not increase the buildability, but it does allow to increase the height of the stadium to install the articulated retractable roof, which will act as an acoustic and light protection barrier for the adjoining urban space.

One of the greatest successes of the works is that no worker has suffered any major accident, something unprecedented worldwide in a work of such depth. The only scare occurred on May 26, when sparks from welding set a polyurethane material on fire, causing a massive column of smoke without major consequences. The works are always dominated from the beginning by some capital personal safety controls, never before taken to this extreme, both in occupational risks and at the health level since the pandemic was declared.

These are some of the figures that make those of the new Bernabéu one of the largest civil works actions.
