34 killed as passenger bus plunges off bridge in Kenya

Nairobi: 34 people were killed and 11 injured as a result of a passenger bus falling from a bridge into a river in the African country of Kenya.

According to foreign media, the accident took place in Tharaka Niti County, where the passenger bus from Meru city to Mombasa overturned from the bridge and plunged into the river 40 meters below, possibly due to brake failure.

As soon as the incident was reported, the rescue officials reached the spot and the bus was cut and the passengers were taken out. The injured have been immediately shifted to the hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

According to local authorities, 14 women, 18 men and 2 girls are among the 34 people killed.

Officials say that the cause of the bus accident has not been revealed, but the preliminary investigation has revealed that the accident may have occurred due to brake failure of the bus.

According to data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, 4,579 people died in traffic accidents in Kenya in 2021.
