Vanilla is a chimpanzee who spent her entire existence in research centers and shelters before being transferred to a primate sanctuary in Florida. Now, finally, you have the opportunity to live in a more natural environment and enjoy a happier, more fulfilling life.
During the symposium of the American Society of Primatologists, Save the Chimps sanctuary researcher in Florida, Andrew Halloran, presented an emotional video. This shows a 29-year-old chimpanzee experiencing sky vision for the first time. This moment was shared to raise awareness of animal welfare and the importance of primate sanctuaries.
Vanilla the chimpanzee spent her life locked in small enclosures and cages. From the age of two she lived in a 1.5 square meter cell inside the Laboratory of Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates, in New York. She stayed there until 1997, the year the institution was closed.
The chimpanzee was then taken to a shelter in California, where she was housed in a larger space along with other chimpanzees. However, the center had to close its doors in 2019 due to financial difficulties.
Due to this situation, Save the Chimps Sanctuary took the necessary steps to transfer Vanilla and other chimpanzees from central California to their facility in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Exciting footage of chimpanzee looking up at the sky
Footage presented by Halloran shows Vanilla being greeted with a warm hug by the alpha male of the pack, Dwight, and looking surprised as she looks up at the sky. “Vanilla is adapting very well. When she’s not exploring the island with her friends, she can be found perched on a three-story climbing platform overlooking her new world.“, commented the specialist.
Vanilla currently resides with 226 other chimpanzees who have been rescued from laboratories, the entertainment industry, the exotic pet trade and zoos. Many of them have gone through long periods of solitary confinement and limited or no interaction with other chimpanzees.
