2800 Accidents Recorded in One Week in Portugal Amid Safety Campaign

Road safety is a major concern during peak travel seasons. To address this, the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the Public Security Police (PSP) launched the “Travel Without Rush” campaign. It ran from July 4 to 11 and had some sobering results.

The goal of the campaign was to encourage drivers to avoid speeding and drive calmly and responsibly. Unfortunately, the numbers tell a different story. There were 2891 accidents, resulting in 11 deaths and 67 serious injuries. This is despite a decrease of 197 accidents compared to the same period last year.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

The authorities reported that 6,798,391 vehicles were inspected, either through automated means or in person. This led to 30,718 infractions, with 21,511 of them related to speeding. The data also shows that there were more fatalities and serious injuries this year compared to last year.

The “Travel Without Rush” campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of road safety, especially during peak travel seasons. While the results are disappointing, the authorities hope that the campaign will encourage drivers to be more mindful of their speed and driving habits.
