21 killed in Bihar poisoning

At least 21 people have died in the last three days in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, according to official figures.

State Excise Minister Sunil Kumar said that 10 deaths have been reported in West Champaran due to alcohol poisoning while 11 deaths have been reported in Gopalganj.

Police are conducting raids at various places in view of the incident and the local police officer has also been suspended. Only after the post-mortem report will it be clear whether the cause of these deaths is alcohol poisoning.

According to the BBC, the killings in Gopalganj district of Bihar started on November 2 and in West Champaran on November 3.

Most of the dead belonged to the Dalit community, while in addition to the deaths, several others were reported to have lost their sight.

It should be noted that in August 2016, 19 people died due to drinking poisonous liquor in Gopalganj and 6 people lost their sight.
