Get ready for some serious soccer anticipation! The draw for the 2026 World Cup finals is set for December 5. It will happen at the Kennedy Center in Washington. This big announcement came from former US President Donald Trump today.

Trump shared his excitement from the Oval Office at the White House. He held the World Cup trophy, given to him by FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “It’s a huge privilege to bring this global party and these amazing athletes, the best in the world, to the very heart of our nation’s capital,” he said. You could feel the buzz in his words.

This 23rd edition of the World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026. For the first time ever, 48 national teams will compete. Three countries are hosting this massive event: the United States, Mexico, and Canada. All three host nations automatically get a spot in the tournament.

The sheer scale of this World Cup is mind-boggling. The United States has picked 11 cities to host matches. These include Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle. Mexico will host games in three cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. Canada has two host cities: Toronto and Vancouver. In total, 104 matches will be played. That’s a huge jump from the 64 games seen in tournaments between 1998 and 2022, which only had 32 teams.

Ten teams have already punched their ticket to the 2026 World Cup. From Asia, we have Australia, South Korea, Iran, and Japan. Excitingly, Jordan and Uzbekistan will be making their World Cup debuts. New Zealand is also in, representing Oceania. South America brings Ecuador, the defending champions Argentina, and Brazil, who holds records for 23 appearances and five titles.

Many other teams are still fighting for their spot. Portugal, for example, is in Europe’s Group F. They will play against Hungary, the Republic of Ireland, and Armenia between September and November. They are aiming for their ninth World Cup appearance, and their seventh in a row.

By the time the draw happens in December, 42 of the 48 finalists will be known. The final six spots will be decided in March 2026 through a series of play-off games. Four of these will be for European teams, and two will be intercontinental matchups.

The current champions are Argentina. They won their third World Cup title in 2022 in Qatar. They beat France, who were the reigning champions at the time, in a thrilling penalty shootout. Argentina also famously lifted the trophy in 1978 as hosts and again in 1986. The world waits to see who will challenge their reign in 2026.
