2022 World Cup: “It’s unbearable!”, complain fans cooled by the level of air conditioning in the stadiums

The Al-Bayt stadium, that of Education City or Al-Janoub… And always the same snoring when approaching the enclosure. The air conditioning motors are humming. Inside, small vents under the supporters’ seats or in the walls spit out very cold air, as Canadian supporter Sabri felt: “I had to go to the very top to be less cold. There is a lot of air conditioning, it’s unbearable!”

By day, in full sun, at dusk… The specifications for the organizers always remain the same: around 22 degrees at the level of the lawn. And this even though the temperatures observed since the start of the competition are not as high as feared (20 to 28°C). Infrared sensors adapt the temperature in real time. Between outside and inside, the contrast is striking. “The best is to be covered”recommends a Tunisian supporter. “For football, it’s very good. For the rest…”launches another, not without thinking of the climatic impact of the event.

No problem, according to the locals

When the question of air conditioning in stadiums is posed to Qatari residents, there is a kind of embarrassment: “24 degrees is not cold.” “It’s perfectadds a local. It’s not a problem at all.” The cool temperatures also affect footballers: two Spanish players were victims of a cold snap.
