2021 BWF World Championship Final: Kidambi Srikanth lost his dream of winning the gold medal in straight sets to Loh Kean Yew

Kidambi Srikanth’s impressive run at the BWF Badminton World Championships ended with a silver medal after losing straight games in the men’s singles final to Singapore’s Loh Keen Yew here on Sunday. Srikanth lost the match 15-21, 20-22 until 43 minutes. Former world number one Srikanth was leading 9-3 in the first game, but his opponent from Singapore made a good comeback. Srikanth lost the first game in just 16 minutes. Srikanth fought better in the second game, but Loh Keen Yoo put in a great performance and came out the winner. The 24-year-old Singaporean had previously surprised world number one and current Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen in the men’s singles event. Srikanth made history by becoming the first Indian player to reach the championship final after a victory over compatriot Lakshya Sen on Saturday.

Second-seeded Akane Yamaguchi won the women’s singles title at the BWF World Championship. The 24-year-old Japanese recorded an impressive 21-14 21-11 victory over world number one and top seed Tai Tzu Ying in 39 minutes. The world number three Yamaguchi thus became the second Japanese player to win the BWF World Championship title in history.

Thailand’s second-seeded pair Dechapol Puwaranukro and Sapsiri Taeratanachai defeated Japan’s third-seeded Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino 21-13 21-14 in straight matches in the women’s doubles final. This is the second title in the history of Thai players. The first title was won by female singles player Ratchanok Intanon on the Guangzhou 2013 stage.
