16-year-old Muslim girl’s marriage of choice: Indian court’s major decision

India’s Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that a 16-year-old girl’s voluntary marriage is legal under Islamic law and has ordered protection for a Muslim couple.

According to Indian media, Justice Jajit Singh Bedi of the Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled on the request of a Muslim couple marrying of their choice.

The court ruled that a 16-year-old Muslim girl could marry of her own free will, citing Islamic law, which states that a boy and a girl should be recognized as adults only after they show signs of puberty. Is taken.

The High Court said that marriage of Muslims is done under Muslim personal law, according to which any person who reaches sexual puberty is considered fit for marriage.

The court clarified that if there is no evidence then 15 years of age is considered eligible for marriage, every citizen of the country has the right to protection of life and liberty.

In the judgment, the court ordered protection to the Muslim couple marrying of their choice and directed the SSP of Pathankot to provide necessary protection to the girl to live with her husband.
