15 inmates killed in Ecuador prison riot

15 inmates were killed and several injured during a riot in an Ecuadorian prison.

According to a spokesman for Ecuador’s prisons management agency SNAI, 15 people were killed and 20 injured in Monday’s riot at the Cotopaxi prison in Lataconga.

Ecuador’s prisons have had several incidents of riots in the past, and more than 400 inmates have died in prison violence since February 2021, which the government has blamed on drug-trafficking gang wars.

Osvaldo Coronel, the governor of Cotopaxi Province, told reporters that prison security had been restored and the situation was under control, with 14 injured being transferred to hospital.

In Ecuador, 12 inmates were killed in a prison riot in July, and just two months later in May, 43 inmates were killed in a riot at the same prison.

The US Commission on Human Rights says that the Ecuadorian government has not taken steps to improve security arrangements in prisons and that prisons are overcrowded.

According to official data, there are 33,500 prisoners in Ecuador’s prisons, which is 11.3% more than the maximum capacity to hold prisoners.
