BERLIN: The German parliament has approved raising the country’s minimum wage to 12 euros per hour.

Germany’s new socialist government has fulfilled its election promise to raise the country’s minimum wage to 12 euros an hour. Salary will be increased by two euros. The government’s decision will take effect in October, benefiting 6.2 million workers.

In the German parliament, 400 members voted in favor of the bill, 41 against and 200 abstained. The non-participating members were from Angela Merkel’s opposition party, the CDU.

CDU members said they were not against the pay hike but against the billing procedure.

Ahead of the vote on the bill in the German parliament, Labor Minister Hubertus Heil said the decision would give the public an additional 400 euros, bringing the monthly income to 1,700 euros. “It’s not too much, but it will make a significant difference in people’s pockets,” he said.
